"I hope you enjoyed the show, it was not so enjoyable for me especially in the first two sets," Djokovic told the crowd. "I did a little pep talk in the mirror," said Djokovic about his bathroom break after the second set. With cracks in Djere's game starting to appear, Djokovic continued to dial up the pressure breaking again to open the fourth set pulling a mighty fist pump from the 36-year-old. Moving in for the kill Djokovic swept the next six games to take the fourth set and a 2-0 lead in the decisive fifth that he would never surrender. "Once I got the break in the third I thought 'OK, I have a shot, I have a chance," said Djokovic.

However it was Wozniacki, twice a U.S. Open finalist, who showed more fitness and a little less competitive rust, winning 11 of 12 games after dropping the opening set. Alcaraz downs Harris to reach US Open third round

Even while not at his best Alcaraz could rely on raw talent and a vast repertoire of shots to see off the 177th ranked South African. After the match Alcaraz focused on the positives, rating his effort as "great" but admitting to a letdown in the third set. "In the end, I think I played a pretty good match and will try to keep the same level." Under Arthur Ashe Stadium's bright lights Alcaraz found himself under even greater scrutiny after an unconvincing build-up to the season's final Grand Slam. There will be no room for such lapses in third round for Alcaraz with 26th seed Dan Evans waiting in the wings.

[1/7] Aug 30, 2023; Flushing, NY, USA; Novak Djokovic of Serbia hits to Bernabe Zapata Miralles of Spain on day three of the 2023 U.S. Open tennis tournament at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. But while results followed the form book for much of the day at the year's final Grand Slam, shocks sprung up as the sun went down. Earlier, Swiss young gun Dominic Stricker delivered a shock by grinding out a 7-5 6-7(2) 6-7(5) 7-6(6) 6-3 win over Greek seventh seed Stefanos Tsitsipas for his first top-10 win. Djokovic remains on course for a fourth U.S. Open title that would pull him level with Margaret Court's record haul of 24 Grand Slams. Sixth seed Gauff warmed up the home crowd early when the teenager beat Mirra Andreeva 6-3 6-3, before handing the baton to the U.S. men.

After a 6-0 6-1 rout of Sweden's Rebecca Peterson in her opening match, Swiatek did not look as at ease as she was made to work for a 6-3 6-4 win over the 322nd-ranked Australian spark plug. Saville, who has only once before beaten a world number one, seven years ago against Angelique Kerber, got the match off to the best possible start breaking Swiatek at the first opportunity. They traded breaks a second time before Swiatek would get her third of the set and hold serve for a 1-0 lead. For Swiatek the win was another step towards defending her U.S. Open crown and keeping the number one world ranking. "I was excited to go out on the court, it has been a couple of years so to come in front of you guys is always a pleasure," Djokovic told the New York crowd. Djokovic broke Muller for a fourth time to open the second set and went 2-0 up before his opponent held serve for the first time, raising both hands in triumph as the crowd roared. But the cheers would be few and far between as Djokovic closed out the second with a wicked forehand. If Alcaraz can repeat as U.S. Open champion, he will end the longest drought of a successful men’s title defence at any Grand Slam tournament since tennis turned professional in 1968. With Alcaraz and Djokovic hogging the spotlight, Daniil Medvedev has been the forgotten man but the third seeded Russian remains a threat to claim his second U.S. Open title in three years. But with his clinical dissection of Balazs, he served notice that he remains a real threat to claim his second U.S. Open title in three years. "I don't care it is normal Carlos and Novak are the biggest names right now," said Medvedev when asked if he felt overlooked. The Australian could prove a much trickier test having forced Medvedev to go three tough sets earlier this year in Doha. After losing to eventual champion Alcaraz in the Wimbledon semi-finals, Medvedev has had a quiet U.S. Open buildup, getting to the quarter-finals of the Canadian Open and the round of 16 a week later in Cincinnati. Aug 10 (Reuters) - Nick Kyrgios has withdrawn from the U.S. Open, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) said on Thursday as the Australian continues to recover from ankle and wrist injuries that have limited him to one tournament this season. The 28-year-old had surgery on his left knee earlier in the year and was beaten in his comeback match following a five-month layoff when he fell to China's Wu Yibing in the Stuttgart Open first round in June. Kyrgios missed the French Open due to a foot injury suffered during the theft of his car and pulled out of Wimbledon with wrist issues. Germany Jan-Lennard Struff has also withdrawn from the U.S. Open, the USTA said. Due to the withdrawals Argentine's Facundo Diaz Acosta and Diego Schwartzman move into the main draw.

Berry suspended for second time for anti-doping violation

Aug 2 (Reuters) - American hammer thrower Gwendolyn Berry, a two-time Olympian and a Pan Am Games gold medallist, has been given a 16-month suspension after testing positive for a banned substance, the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) said on Wednesday. It is the second doping ban within a 10-year period for Berry, who was a member of the 2016 and 2020 U.S. Olympic teams. Berry’s violation resulted from her use of a topical medication containing the diuretic and masking agent spironolactone for which she had a prescription. However, Berry failed to obtain a Therapeutic Use Exemption for the medication. Berry's 16-month ban was backdated to April 28, the date her provisional suspension was imposed, ruling her out of this month's world athletics championships in Budapest.

June 26 (Reuters) - The United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) is unequivocal in its support of Ukraine but will listen to any International Olympic Committee (IOC) plan to have Russian and Belarusian athletes compete as neutrals at the 2024 Paris Games. With the Olympics just a little over a year away pressure is mounting on the IOC, sporting federations, national Olympic committees and governments to make a call on the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes at the Paris Games. There are mounting concerns that if Russian athletes are cleared to compete in Paris, even as neutrals, it could spark a Ukraine-led boycott of the Games. Perez's seat with Red Bull safe for now says Button

June 20 (Reuters) - Sergio Perez's seat with Red Bull is safe for this Formula One season, former champion Jenson Button said on Tuesday, but if the Mexican's struggles continue he could be looking for another team next year. Horner also said the team was going to stand by Perez and help him through the slump but Red Bull have not always shown patience with under-performing drivers. DRIVERS SHAKE-UPScenarios are starting to emerge about what a possible drivers shake-up at Red Bull might look like. One rumour has Ricciardo, who previously drove for Red Bull from 2014-18, going from a reserve role to a seat with sister outfit AlphaTauri, replacing under-performing Nick de Vries. Such a move would allow Australian Ricciardo to remove some competitive rust and make a seamless transition back into the Red Bull seat if Perez was dumped.
